Joovy Caboose Ultralight Review

The Joovy Caboose Ultralight is a little different to the tandem pushchairs that we have used before, taking away much of the element that we liked about the more traditional ones and replaced the rear seat with either a standing space or step-like seat for the older child instead.

As our children are fairly close in age, it was maybe something that we would consider moving over to once the children are a little older, however we felt that it was a little too soon for that for us right now.

That said, we gave the Joovy Caboose Ultralight the chance to shine and change our mind, unfortunately as you will see, it just wasn’t able to do that for us right now.

Handling

The Joovy Caboose Ultralight boasts two different sizes of wheels, with small, rotating wheels at the front of the stroller and larger, fixed wheels at the back just like you would expect when you are going to be adding additional weight to the rear.

Steering and handling was great, it has to be said and even with the older of the children stood or seated at the rear, it was good for navigating around those tight spaces that we are often faced with while doing the school run.

Considered to be the ‘Most lightweight, compact and manoeuvrable tandem pushchair available’, the Joovy Caboose Ultralight certainly did showcase its brilliance there and even Simon managed to learn to like the freedom of movement that it had to offer.

Storage Space

The ‘under seat’ storage space on the Joovy Caboose stroller was like a breath of fresh air, having previously tried a pushchair that seriously lacked the ability to help me avoid playing pack horse while out of the house.

The removal of the rear seat in design really helps the amount that you can pack in under there, giving me more than enough space to keep everything I need for while out and about as well as a couple of bags of shopping nicely inside it.

I do think that there has to be some consider when it comes to the amount of storage that you would expect from a stroller, especially a double one and realise that the removal of the more substantial rear seat opened up the spacing to achieve what Joovy have, but then I quickly remember that my oldest child is stood for the majority of the journey.

Seating

We really liked the seating position of the seat that was included into the structure of the pram and the position that it was given, which seems to have helped to create a better centre of weight to move the Joovy Caboose about.

I think that with the children at the age that they are, I would have preferred to have seen a secondary rear seat added so that the second child didn’t have to stand between myself and the pram, so that would ultimately make this not something that we would look at right now, although if you had a bigger age gap between your children it could be well suited as did look fun!

One of the benefits that comes with the Joovy Caboose Ultralight is that the seat that is included comes with a universal adaptor to fit the seat into your car quickly and easily, making going from A to B easy and uneventful, which i’m sure many parents can share that relief with me.

Ease of Use

As mentioned earlier in the review, the Joovy Caboose Ultralight is very lightweight and that is a huge plus point for us as i’m not the tallest mother in the world and sometimes that means I struggle to lift double strollers out of the back of the car without scratching it (sorry Simon!).

It was easy to open up and attach the seat after a car journey and the steering certainly kept the stress levels to a low, so that alone will be enough to get some of you to purchase it i’m sure.

Appearance

The Joovy Caboose Ultralight looks fantastic and is by far one of the better looking pushchairs that we have used to date, however that could also be helped by the fact that they eliminated the design surrounding a rear seat.

The combination of black and grey means that the style lasts as long as the pushchair and will keep you looking great for a few years, before your little one is able to walk alongside and the need for a duo stroller is long gone.

If we were thinking about buying on looks alone, this would certainly be in contention for a low cost option for us, but suitability has to take the lead here and that just didn’t meet the expectation that we hoped for due to the children being a little younger than we felt they needed to be.

Final Thoughts

The Joovy Caboose Ultralight looks and feels great while you are out and about, however the loss of the second seat in place of a standing position or step seat is a blow to us as naturally both children want to be seated.

Its timeless looks are modern and lightweight and moving about the shopping centre is a breeze thanks to the steering and then throw in there that you have plenty of space to put your things and you are onto a winner, no doubt about that.

That said, would I buy one now?

Not at the moment, our children are a little too young to make this an option for us and that is one of the biggest draw backs that we have to offer when you take a look at the price point.

It’s something that we may consider in the future, should tandem strollers not evolve further but at the moment it just wasn’t right for what we needed it for.

UPDATE: It appears that you can purchase a secondary seat specifically for this stroller, see Joovy Caboose Too Rear Seat.
